Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu - Why do I keep going back to class?

“Why do I do that?” I ask myself? And the answer is; “ I don’t know. What I am referring to is - this is not related to the title of the blog - that I have had this blog running circles in my head, but instead that I write the damn thing I choose to procrastinate. By clicking HERE you are able to read how I started training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Ok let’s do this…

Why do I keep going back to class?

Ok, for you to be able to understand my question I have to give you more context. The reason why I am asking myself this question is because I am wondering about it myself. One of the aspects of #BJJ that no one told me about is the soreness, stiffness, and aches your body goes through after a good training session. And, everybody is different and everybody handles body aches differently. There are days that I am not able to walk straight because my whole body aches. Even at work my colleagues know whether or not I had an intense training session by the way I walk.

I train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu three times a week and the training sessions are two to three hours each. I have a recovery training at the gym and after an infra red sauna. This is my training routine for a whole week. Another question that comes to me is;

Why do I keep putting my body through this?

There are times that I come home from a training session and I tell my wife that I a good training session and the next morning my body is all bruised up and than she asks me; “WTF are you doing to yourself?” Nobody told me about this part, because I think like I stated before; everybody handles this part differently. The sore joints, the muscle aches, that back ache you are not able to shake - than comes the tiger balsams, massages, infra red saunas, more massages and so on and so on….

The answer to my question is…

I don’t have one answer, but I do have several answers and I believe that I will have more along the way as my Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey continues. What are my current answers you ask? Well…

  • I am fan of martial arts to begin with. But, more specifically I am fan of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

  • I like it, no really.. I like it a lot. The thing I most like about it is that you NEVER stop learning and BJJ itself keeps evolving

  • I want to get better at it and I still have that eagerness in me to learn.

  • I can not wait for the next training session it is that addictive

  • I get smashed during sparring a lot (hence the body aches), but I do NOT get Discouraged. I get frustrated but not discouraged.

As I stated, I do have several answers and these are all reasons why I keep going back.

During the summer gathering of 2019 I received my 2nd stripe on my white belt from sensei Jordy Peute. Thanks to all my team mates and Sensei Jordy for pushing during each training session. The picture is taken by Marga Hondorp. Edited by Jairo Martinez

My Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey has just begun. We just had a week off, because Sensei Jordy had to compete in a tournament in Japan. I don’t like it when I don’t train. I even feel out of shape, because I didn’t exercise as much as when I am training BJJ three times a week. OK, how crazy is that?

I will have many intense training sessions ahead of me that will eventually lead to more body aches and soreness, and I will always keep going back to class!

Oss!
